MCB Profiles MusicLibraryReport.com
For every new composer hoping to make a living from licensing music, there are new companies willing to take an ever-growing percentage of sync fees and royalties paid through a PRO (BMI, ASCAP, SESAC).
While there is lots of free information available on the web, the best source yet is MusicLibraryReport.com, where music makers comment and rate production music libaries with surprising honesty.
The site's creator, Art Munson, goes to great length to keep the discussion open and accurate.
“It used to be that you were hired to write by the music libraries and they would give you a fee and a budget to hire the players and studio,” says Munson. “The library owned the music and the composers would get the writer share of the back end writing royalties. A recent change has been the non-exclusive model. You get to keep your copyright (and place in other libraries). There is no upfront money but you share in any sync fees and you still get the writing backend.”
Another hot topic on MusicLibaryReport.com is the increasing number of royalty free music sites, where tracks are sold and downloaded online for a reasonable price. Royalty free doesn't necessarily mean that composers lose out on PRO royalty income - music supervisors and editors are still required to file cue sheets.
Despite the increased competition, Munson is optimistic. "I do think that today there are more opportunities than ever," says Munson. "One of the readers on our site is making six figures per year, mostly with non-exclusive libraries."
